The world of model railroading can be intimidating. The sheer scale of some layouts, the intricate wiring, the endless array of locomotives and rolling stock… it’s enough to make a newcomer’s head spin. But what if you could get a taste of this hobby, a complete, ready-to-run setup that fits on your desk? Enter the Rokuhan Shorty series that’s has several starter kits to get you going. I decided to try out the Narita Express (N’EX) set.

What’s in the Box?

The Rokuhan Shorty N’EX starter set (model number SG003-1) is an “all-in-one” introduction to Z-scale model railroading. Inside, you’ll find:

  • A three-car Narita Express train: This is a “shorty” version of the iconic train that connects Narita International Airport to the Greater Tokyo Area.
  • A powered motor chassis and two non-powered “trailer” chassis: The train comes with dummy chassis, which you’ll need to swap out to get it running.
  • An oval of Rokuhan’s Z-gauge track: This includes two 110mm straight pieces and eight R45 curved pieces, creating a very compact layout of 160mm x 110 mm (≈6.3 x 4.4inch)
  • A battery-powered controller (RC004): A simple, portable controller to get your train moving. Requires 2 – AA batteries.
  • A rerailer: Tool to help you get the trains onto the tracks.

The Narita Express Shorty

The “Shorty” concept is what makes this set unique. The train is true to Z-scale in height and width but the cars are significantly shortened (compressed). This allows them to navigate incredibly tight curves, making a desk-sized layout possible. The N’EX itself is nicely detailed for its size, with the distinctive red, white, and black livery of the real train faithfully reproduced. It’s a “charming” little model that captures the essence of its full-sized counterpart.

Track and Controller

The included track is a simple oval, perfect for a first layout. The R45 (45mm radius) curves are incredibly tight, demonstrating the “Shorty” advantage. The controller is a basic, battery-powered unit with a simple forward/reverse and 3 step speed control.

Performance

Out of the box, the N’EX is a fun and relatively smooth runner at medium to high speeds. Setting it up is a breeze. I had some issues at the low speed setting out of the box. After running it for 30min on high speed to break it in low speed worked much better, not perfect but acceptable. However I would probably run this on medium speed most of the time. In my case the tracks was not attached so the fact that they flexed a bit when running the train probably also added to some inconsistency on low speed.

Who is this for?

This starter set is perfect for a few different types of people:

  • The Beginner: If you’re curious about model railroading or Z scale in particular, but don’t want to commit to a large, expensive layout, this is an ideal starting point. It’s a complete, affordable package that will have you up and running in minutes.
  • The Small-Space Dweller or Micro Layout enthusiast: Live in an apartment or have limited space? The Rokuhan Shorty system is a fantastic way to enjoy a model railroad without sacrificing a whole room.
